Music can play at Westover Market

The Arlington County Board conditionally approved live outdoor music at Westover Market, but not without several restrictions that county staff will be regularly monitoring.

Owners of the Westover Market will be allowed to play music at its outdoor café, more commonly known as the Beer Garden, three nights a week from April 1 to Oct. 31.

The entertainers would not be allowed to use ampliphers to reduce noise, and no more than 98 people would be allowed at the Market during performances.

County staff will review the permit in September to see if rules are being followed.

Staff members had recommended on Saturday that the board reject the Market’s request, but board members asked for more time to come to a compromise that would allow the music, which most neighbors and patrons of the market overwhelmingly supported.

“The board is striving for a balance here that will both allow limited live entertainment outdoors at this neighborhood restaurant and protect the surrounding neighborhood,” said County Board Chairman Christopher Zimmerman. “In the coming months, we will be monitoring the situation carefully.”
