A freshman at West Virginia University was arrested Wednesday after allegedly threatening to go on a shooting spree.
Responding to a tip, police at the university arrested Cheickna Kagnassy, 21, and charged him with making terroristic threats. Police say they acted after receiving a tip from a “concerned citizen,” although the nature of the tip and who reported it has not been made public.
Police searched the university residence after Kagnassy was apprehended but found no weapons. He was taken to jail before his arraignment and his bail was set at $75,000. If he does get released, one of the conditions is that he can’t be on university property.
West Virginia University Police Chief W.P. Chedester said the arrest was an indication that the university has a good system in place for reporting and responding to potential threats.
“Our number one concern is always the safety of the University community and this provides an example of the system working exactly the way it should,” Chedester said. “Someone saw something and said something. We investigated and found sufficient reason to take action, all within less than 24 hours.”
The arrest comes a day after a student at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte killed two people and critically wounded three others in an on-campus shooting.
