During an appearance on On the Record with Brit Hume Tuesday night, WEEKLY STANDARD senior writer John McCormack discussed House speaker Paul Ryan’s decision to focus entirely on House races and not campaign with Donald Trump. Ryan made the announcement on a conference call Tuesday with House members following the leak of a damaging 2005 video in which Trump brags about groping women.
“This is all about [Ryan] saving the House majority. Because that might be the only thing stopping Hillary Clinton from getting her wish list,” McCormack said. “If Democrats get the House, if they nuke the filibuster [in the Senate], you’re talking about single-payer Canadian-style healthcare, you’re talking about unlimited tax payer funding of abortion for any reason.”
“That’s what the Democrats really want,” he continued. “That seemed unthinkable a couple of weeks ago. Now they’re trying to go for the kill shot. They want complete control. And Ryan is just saying, hey, I’m not un-endorsing. I’m letting people do what you think is best for your own district. We need to save the House to be in check on Hillary Clinton.”
