Travis Air Force Base says there was a false alarm after the central California base was put on lockdown shortly before 4 p.m. local time Wednesday due to a “real-world security incident”
“Travis Air Force Base is currently responding to a real-world security incident. More details will be released as they become available. The public is being asked to stay away from the base to ensure emergency responders can respond accordingly,” the base wrote in a Facebook post.
A witness told CBS Sacramento there is an active shooter at a shopping center at the base, but an hour after the lockdown had been installed, the base said the incident was a false alarm.
“Travis Air Force Base emergency personnel responded to reports of gun shots at the Base Exchange. However, it was determined to be a false alarm,” the base said.
Rep. John Garamendi, D-Calif., told the Associated Press there was a training exercise going on at the base at the time and “someone took that to be an active shooter.”
The base is located approximately 50 miles northeast of San Francisco and falls under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command.
