HONOLULU (AP) — May was another record-breaking month for Hawaii tourism.
According to data released Thursday by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, visitor spending last month increased 17.5 percent to $1.1 billion, compared to May 2011.
The authority says this was the best total spending on record for the month of May. April also saw a record-high in spending.
There were nearly 623,000 visitors to the islands last month, an increase of 12.5 percent from a year ago. This was also a new high for May arrivals.
A 2.6 percent increase in daily per person spending to $190 contributed to the record visitor spending.
The authority expects this summer to be more prosperous than last year because of new direct flights from New York City, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas and Fresno.
