Three in 4 adults believe wearing masks is important for returning to normal life: Poll

A poll found 77% of people in the United States believe wearing masks in public is either very or somewhat important before they are willing to return to their activities from life before the coronavirus pandemic.

The Gallup poll, the results of which were released Monday, was conducted from April 27 to May 3 and gauged which factors are important when people consider their willingness to resume their normal habits.

A total of 68% of respondents said it was “very important” that a vaccine be produced to combat COVID-19, while 17% said it was “somewhat important,” and only 7% said it is “not important at all.”

Regarding the use of masks in public, 47% said it was very important as part of returning to normalcy. Thirty percent said it was somewhat important, and 11% said it was not important at all.

Eighty-two percent of adults said it was either very or somewhat important to have widespread testing in place. The same amount said it was very or somewhat important that there be requirements for people to stay 6 feet away from others.

The survey was conducted online and quizzed 4,553 U.S. adults as the country begins to emerge slowly from the shelter-in-place orders imposed during the height of the pandemic. The poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
