A series of shootings in Vienna left at least three people and more than a dozen injured in what Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Monday night was “definitely” a terror attack.
Police said that the shootings across six locations began around 8 p.m. local time and involved suspects armed with rifles. Authorities said at least three people, including one of the attackers, were killed and 15 others were injured, according to the Associated Press.
One officer was among those injured, police said.
Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told a local news outlet that the army had been called in to help guard some locations as police search for assailants still at large. In a press conference, Nehammer said at least one attacker was on the run.
Police shared an early evening update that categorized the situation as “still active.”
Australian broadcaster ORF reported that the attacker shot and killed by police was wearing an explosive belt and bag full of ammunition. The belt is reportedly being diffused by the demining service.
“Stay at home! If you’re on the Streets, take shelter! Keep away from public places, don’t use public Transportation!” police tweeted.

“Due to the current situation, there will be no compulsory education in Vienna tomorrow. Children can therefore stay at home, excused. For all those for whom this is not possible, the schools are of course open. Stay safe and above all healthy!” the city of Vienna said in a tweet.
President Trump addressed the apparent terrorist attack late Monday night over Twitter.
“Our prayers are with the people of Vienna after yet another vile act of terrorism in Europe. These evil attacks against innocent people must stop. The U.S. stands with Austria, France, and all of Europe in the fight against terrorists, including radical Islamic terrorists,” Trump said.

Oskar Deutsch, the president of the Israelite Religious Society in Austria, said that the shooting occurred on the street where the city’s main synagogue is, but was not certain whether or not the place of worship itself was targeted.
Deutsch shared an article from a Vienna-based newspaper that reports seven individuals are dead. “The perpetrator is fleeting, the hotspot is now on the Hohen Markt,” he wrote.
One of the attackers was reportedly killed and another arrested by authorities. Israel’s Channel 20 shared footage that it said was “exclusive video of the shooting from the first moments of the attack in Vienna, Austria.”
At the time of the attack, the synagogue was reportedly closed.

Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister told the Associated Press he witnessed an individual fire shots at people who were near outside bars in the street. “They were shooting at least 100 rounds just outside our building,” Hofmeister said.
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz called the shootings a “hideous terrorist attack.”
“We will never allow ourselves to be intimidated by terrorism and will fight these attacks resolutely by all means. So that the police can concentrate fully on the fight against terrorism, the federal government has decided that the armed forces will take over the property protection previously carried out by the police in Vienna with immediate effect,” Kurz said in a series of translated tweets.
French President Emmanuel Macron also shared a message of solidarity with Austrian citizens. “We, French, share the shock and sadness of the Austrians after an attack in Vienna. After France, it is a friendly country that is under attack. This is our Europe. Our enemies need to know who they are dealing with. We won’t give in to anything,” he wrote in a translated tweet.
