Millions of Americans will get out of town this July 4 — 2 million more than last year, according to travel tracker AAA.
About 42.3 million people will travel 50 miles or more for Independence Day this year, up from 40.3 million travelers last year, AAA said.
The travel and insurance agency predicts that low gas prices and a longer holiday weekend will entice people to hit the road or take to the air. This year’s holiday is on a Wednesday, so many will make a five-day weekend of it.
“Since July 4 falls on a Wednesday, the calendar will play a role in driving holiday travel volume as the mid-week holiday expands the traditional five-day travel period to six days,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic’s Lon Anderson. “A hump day holiday won’t keep Americans from celebrating.”
