Anne Arundel school system making $500,000 in new cuts

The Anne Arundel school system is making another round of cuts through the remainder of the fiscal year.

The casualties are contracted services, equipment purchases, and professional development trips and stipends.

“I think [Superintendent Kevin Maxwell] is trying to show the county executive and County Council that he?s doing everything in his power to be conservative,” said Anita Owens, president of the Anne Arundel County Council of PTAs.

These cuts are expected to save an estimated $500,000 in the operating budget, school system spokesman Bob Mosier said.

Approved trips and purchases will be reviewed to determine whether they can proceed, he added.

The only items to be considered will be emergency equipment purchases ? subject to Maxwell?s approval.

Maxwell last month said he would reduce substitutes to save $200,000 and eliminate 50 nonteaching positions, which had been mostly vacant, throughout the year to save about $2.5 million.

Maxwell has recommended a $968 million operating budget, almost $100 million more than last year?s approved budget, which he is concerned the county may not fully fund because of anticipated state aid reductions and other belt-tightening measures.
