Trump: Muhammad Ali was a ‘truly great champion’

In a late night tweet, presumptive GOP nominee Republican Donald Trump commented on the death of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who died Friday evening after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

“Muhammad Ali is dead at 74! A truly great champion and a wonderful guy. He will be missed by all!” Trump said in his message.

The two had met at least once. In 2007, Trump was handed the Muhammad Ali award from Ali himself at Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night XIII in Phoenix, Ariz.

Late last year Trump incurred the wrath of Ali, who became a Muslim in the 1960s, when the candidate called for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. following the jihad-inspired mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif.

“Speaking as someone who has never been accused of political correctness, I believe that our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion of Islam and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people’s views on what Islam really is,” Ali said.
