Trump threatens embargo, sanctions against Cuba

President Trump warned that Cuba would face a “full and complete embargo” and high-level sanctions if it fails to stop military operations in Venezuela.

“If Cuban Troops and Militia do not immediately CEASE military and other operations for the purpose of causing death and destruction to the Constitution of Venezuela, a full and complete……..embargo, together with highest-level sanctions, will be placed on the island of Cuba. Hopefully, all Cuban soldiers will promptly and peacefully return to their island!” Trump tweeted Tuesday evening.

Trump’s remarks come after national security adviser John Bolton accused Cuba of backing Venezuela strongman Nicolás Maduro. The U.S. and other allies issued support for opposition leader Juan Guaidó earlier this year.

“We don’t know exactly what the command structure is now, other than that it reports to Havana,” Bolton told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

Bolton also said “all options” including military intervention were on the table regarding how to handle the crisis in Venezuela, but said Trump wants a “peaceful” transition of power.

“It’s a very delicate moment,” Bolton said. “The president wants to see a peaceful transfer of power.”
