Female soloists celebrate every art form

Local musician Bonnie Jones has found the best of the best female soloists in Baltimore.

Jones, along with visual artist Jackie Milad, is the creator of Los Solos, a monthly series of solo performances by groundbreaking female artists. The program presents the solo performance work of dancers, musicians, writers, filmmakers, conceptual artists, theatrical performers, performance artists and curators.

Each performance highlights a local artist paired with a performer from outside of Maryland. “It’s a good way to connect locals with out-of-town artists, and a good way for locals to explore more opportunities for exchanging ideas,” Jones said.

Whispers for Wolves, aka Melissa Moore, is the first performer in the series. A musician and sculptor based out of Baltimore, Moore’s sound work is an intersection of music, sculpture and installation. “There’s definitely a big visual component to the music,” she said.

The other musician performing with Moore is Tara Burke, or Fursaxa, a psych folk chanteuse from Philadelphia who incorporates voice, guitar, organ, dulcimer, accordion, Casio and more to create her pieces.

The series doesn’t just feature musicians — there are also poets, dancers, contextual artists and videographers.

“It’s a pretty broadly curated series. I want to get the best of a lot of different worlds,” Jones said.
