Two Navy SEAL candidates were rushed to hospitals on Friday in California, hours after completing the fourth week of the assessment known as “Hell Week.”
One SEAL died, while the other was listed in stable condition at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
“The Sailors were not actively training when they reported symptoms and were transported to receive emergency care,” the Navy said in a statement. “The cause of the candidate’s death is currently unknown and is under investigation.”

The deceased candidate died at Sharp Coronado Hospital. The Navy said the identity of the sailor was being withheld until immediate family was notified.

The initial phase of assessment, which is part of the SEALs’ BUD/S class, included basic underwater demolition, survival, and other combat tactics “designed to push students to their maximum capability both physically and mentally,” with the goal of selecting students for training within the Naval Special Warfare Basic Training Command, according to Navy Times.
