Ryan: No vote to impeach IRS chief, for now

House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday threw cold water on a move by conservative lawmakers to vote immediately on whether to impeach IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus introduced a resolution on Wednesday to impeach Koskinen, who they say has withheld information from Congress and has done little to reform the agency. On Thursday morning, Rep. John Fleming, R-La., made a motion to make it a privileged resolution that deserves an immediate vote.

But Ryan, R-Wis., said the House will not consider the resolution Thursday, which marks the last session of Congress before lawmakers adjourn for the rest of the summer.

“We are going to have a good conversation when we get back,” Ryan said when asked about the resolution. He added that Fleming’s motion expires in two legislative days, which supporters say will allow lawmakers to resume its consideration when they return in September.

Ryan said most lawmakers “aren’t focused” on the impeachment resolution and are busy with the string of bills the House is working to pass before the recess.

“When we return from the work period we will talk about it as a family,” Ryan said.
