Elon Musk launches new AI company xAI

Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Wednesday a brand new company called xAI, which will focus on artificial intelligence.

The goal of the company is to “understand the true nature of the universe.” Information about this new company will be announced in a live Twitter Spaces chat this Friday, according to the company’s website.

“Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality,” Musk wrote on social media.

The xAI team is led by Musk, with members of the team having previously worked at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto. The team is advised by Dan Hendrycks, who is currently serving as the director of the Center for AI Safety.

Musk, along with 11 other members of the team, have their Twitter accounts linked on the website.

“The mathematics of deep learning is profound, beautiful, and unreasonably effective,” wrote Greg Yang, xAI’s co-founder. “Developing the ‘theory of everything’ for large neural networks will be central to taking AI to the next level. Conversely, this AI will enable everyone to understand our mathematical universe in ways unimaginable before.”

xAI is recruiting engineers and researchers to join its team, and anyone interested can fill out a form to apply.

The launch of xAI comes after Musk discussed creating an alternative to OpenAI and TruthGPT, saying he would “try to create a third option.” Musk expressed concern that OpenAI is being “trained to be politically correct.”

Musk added that it was “fundamentally important” to create an AI alternative.

“I will try to create a third option, and that third option hopefully does more good than harm,” Musk said. “The intention with OpenAI was obviously to do good, but it’s not good if it’s actually doing good or whether it’s, I can’t tell at this point.”
