Friend: Driver is ‘very sad’ over boy’s death

A 5-year-old boy was struck by a car and killed last weekend, Anne Arundel County police said Monday.

Colin Matthew Cunningham, of Stevensville, on Saturday ran into Whispering Woods Drive in an Annapolis town house community where he was struck by a Jeep Wrangler at 6:30 p.m., police said.

Colin was trying to follow teens on their way to play football. The Jeep had stopped while the teens crossed then proceeded, at which point Colin stepped into the road, police said.

The driver, Allison Canfield, 18, of Annapolis, was heading home with her sister Lynnette, 14, and a neighbor, Paige Clifton, 16; none of them were injured. Canfield immediately stopped to help Colin, police said.

Colin was flown with his parents, Lisa and John Cunningham, to Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital in Baltimore, where he was pronounced dead. Colin’s family could not be reached Monday.

“Allison is doing the best that she can,” said Cameron Brown, of Glen Burnie, a friend speaking on behalf of the family. “She’s very sad that this has happened. It’s a terrible tragedy and we just hope everybody can be strong and get through these trying times together.”
