The unexpected takes the stage when the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra joins forces with tap-dancing king Savion Glover in the Symphony with a Twist Series: Dance.
The BSO, led by the dynamic Music Director Marin Alsop will present Duke Ellington?s jazz suite “The River,” accompanied by Glover dancing original choreography.
Glover?s choreography was featured in the film “Happy Feet,” which won the 2006 Oscar for best animated feature.
“Savion Glover [is] the eighth wonder of the world,” with a “virtuoso command of syncopated time,” the Detroit Free Press wrote of his debut performance of “The River” with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in January.
BSO program notes remark on the piece?s evocative “spirit of a flowing river, while alluding to the spiritual flow of life itself.”
The Symphony with a Twist Series: Dance showcases Maestra Alsop?s gift for programming.
“Maestra Alsop has long engaged in collaborative projects, both within the field of classical music and in other artistic disciplines,” BSO Artistic Administrator Jeremy Rothman said.
The performance includes Leonard Bernstein?s “Symphonic Dances” from “West Side Story,” performed by dancers from the Atlantic Ballroom and Baltimore School for the Arts.
