White House: Biden speech will focus on MAGA ‘extremist threat to our democracy’

President Joe Biden‘s speech in Philadelphia will focus on “the battle over democracy in this country,” the White House said on Wednesday.

Biden will deliver a midterm election prime-time address on Thursday, and he’s expected to continue his 2020 tagline of calling the election a battle for the soul of the nation. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre previewed some of Biden’s talking points during a press briefing.

“The president thinks there is an extremist threat to our democracy,” she said. “The president has been clear on that particular piece. When we talk about a democracy, when we talk about our freedoms, the way he sees it is the MAGA Republicans are the most energized part of the Republican Party.”

Democrats seem to have picked up some momentum in the midterm elections, with Biden’s approval ratings ticking up and party candidates suddenly OK with being seen with him again.

“Not to go into specifics about the speech, but as you know, we’re calling it ‘the soul of the nation,'” Jean-Pierre said. “He takes that very seriously when it comes to our democracy.”

The press secretary later named Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) as examples of right-wing extremism, while saying outgoing Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD) is an example of a more principled conservative.

Jean-Pierre did say that Biden would not denounce Republicans in person, only that they should tune in to his speeches.

“All you have to do is turn on the TV and hear from the president directly on how he feels,” she said. “He’s not going to shy away.”
