Trail Blazers (25-16) at Wizards (13-26)

Since when did 1 pm become so early? Are we all still in college?

In any case, Wizards head coach Flip Saunders said his team had breakfast waiting for them this morning: “We had breakfast here, so you hope they have a little bit of fuel in their tank.”

Caron Butler, of course, was seen carrying a small bag from McDonald’s into the training room.

What the Wizards do have is a chance to improve to 2-0 in their six-game homestand, which the Nike-sponsored players may do in new Martin Luther King Jr. Day-inspired shoes that are black, red, green and gray.

“Today will be a big game from the standpoint of trying to get a little bit of tread on our tires,” Saunders said. He was also asked about the magical 40-game threshold, which reminded me what a crazy haze the last ten have been.

“It’s changed a little bit,” said Saunders of his most recent evaluation of the team, “because we’ve done some things here recently and we’ve actually played a little bit better, taking care of the basketball, trying to get the ball to right guys and playing, maybe, at a better tempo at times.”

I did hear Randy Foye ask Mike Miller if he was playing today, and Miller said yes. Saunders had hedged moments before during his pregame chat, but said he would bring Miller off the bench if he was active.

The other player of the day? DeShawn Stevenson, who had 9 points against Sacramento on Saturday, one night after playing nearly 46 minutes at Chicago.

“He’s knocked down shots by playing as many minutes as he did,” said Saunders. “At times, we’ve maybe forced him to get in better shape. It seems to have made him a little lighter on his feet. He’s done a good job accepting the challenge, giving us a little bit of toughness, what we need in our lineup and a little bit of consistency. You know what to expect from him from defensive standpoint, and basically from the standpoint of being able to execute.”
