Trump considering DC litigator Pat Cipollone as new White House counsel

President Trump is considering Washington, D.C. litigator Pat Cipollone to take over White House counsel Don McGahn’s position.

The president interviewed the former Justice Department attorney earlier this week, two sources familiar with Trump’s thinking told the Washington Post. One person told the paper that Trump is “strongly” considering him.

Without revealing any names, Trump tweeted on Thursday that he was excited about the person he chose to take over as White House counsel. But it wasn’t clear if he was referring to Cipollone.

Cipollone is currently practicing commercial litigation at Stein Mitchell Cipollone Beato & Missner, but has been working on advising Trump’s legal team behind the scenes since June.

Trump confirmed Wednesday that McGahn will be leaving the White House in the fall, after the confirmation of his second Supreme Court Justice nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. Many think McGahn is the one who convinced Trump not to fire key members of the Justice Department, but Trump has denied that.
