Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday he expects to have a vote on a 20-week abortion ban “at some point,” but didn’t say when.
“We expect to have a vote on it at some point,” he said at a press conference with President Trump at the White House Monday.
McConnell said virtually every Senate Republican supports the bill, which would outlaw abortions after 20 weeks, at which point some scientific studies say a fetus can feel pain.
But the problem is that the legislation, which passed the House, would require 60 votes in the Senate. That would be nearly impossible to achieve.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., introduced a Senate version of the House ban a few weeks ago.
The inability in the Senate to pass major abortion language has led some House members to call for an end to the legislative filibuster, but McConnell has been reluctant to take that step.
