Trump FBI pick Christopher Wray promises to act based on ‘the impartial pursuit of justice’

Christopher Wray, the nominee to be the next FBI director, pledged loyalty the Consitution and “the impartial pursuit of justice.”

“I will never allow the FBI’s work to be driven by anything other than the facts, the law, and the impartial pursuit of justice. Period,” Wray said during his Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on Wednesday, according to his prepared opening remarks.

“My loyalty is to the Constitution and the rule of law. They have been my guideposts throughout my career, and I will continue to adhere to them no matter the test,” he added.

As leader of the FBI, Wray promised the agency will not just be “independent,” but will “make every American proud.”

When pressed by Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Wray said “independence” is the only way he knows how to do the job.

“I believe to my core that there is only one right way to do this job, and that is with strict independence, by the book, playing it straight, faithful to our Constitution, faithful to our laws, faithful to the best practices of the institution,” he answered.

“Anybody who thinks I would be pulling punches as the FBI director sure doesn’t know me very well,” Wray later added.

Wray, if confirmed, would become the eighth FBI Director. President Trump nominated him in early June, roughly four weeks after firing James Comey.
