Turkish government forces under the direction of President Tayyip Erdogan have reportedly regained control of the country following an attempted coup by portions of the military.
Erdogan returned to Istanbul early Saturday morning amid an uprising that claimed more than 160 lives, according to multiple reports.
Although the military had implemented a curfew on Turkish citizens, Erdogan encouraged his supporters to ignore the curfew and gather on the streets. Access to social media was blocked during the height of the attempted government takeover, and several reports described explosions and gunfire in the capital city of Ankara.
But the coup attempt appeared to have fizzled by Saturday afternoon in Turkey, with Erdogan vowing to punish those who had planned the uprising.
