Police in Paris shot and wounded a man who attacked an officer with a hammer outside of the Notre Dame Cathedral, according to reports.
Police initially said they evacuated the area around Notre Dame Cathedral for a security operation, the department said on Twitter. But a spokesman told BFM TV the attacker pulled a hammer from his backpack.
He reportedly yelled, “This is for Syria,” according to France’s interior minister.
Police shot the attacker in the legs, and he was taken to the hospital.
Prosecutors have launched an anti-terror investigation into the attack. France remains in a state of emergency after the attacks in Paris in November 2015, when 130 people were killed.
