Members of the Congressional House Appropriations Committee received a letter Wednesday that contained a warning regarding the District’s funding bill for 2012: no funny business — or else.
The letter, sent by several national organizations, told representatives that if they tried to attach riders to the funding bill that served political interests, they would fight back in their home districts.
“We will make certain that our members — in every district — know how their representatives are spending their time in Washington: meddling in the affairs of D.C. residents rather than focusing on the nation’s true, pressing business,” the letter said.
The letter was signed by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Human Rights Campaign, AIDS United and DC Vote, according to the office of D.C. congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton.
The recent budget passed by Congress in the 11th hour to avoid a government shutdown contained a rider prohibiting the District from spending its local funds on abortion services for low-income women.
