Democrats fundraise off new Trump lead

PHILADELPHIA — Congressional Democrats touted Donald Trump’s three-point lead in a fundraising plea informing supporters that Trump’s rise in popularity was “devastating news.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee blasted out the results of a new CNN poll that showed Trump had risen by six points since mid-July while Hillary Clinton had fallen by four points over the same period.

“Right now, we need to take a deep breath and put our heads down,” the DCCC wrote in its plea for campaign cash.

The fundraising email asked 5,000 Democrats to chip in $1 each ahead of the start of the convention here Monday afternoon.

Trump’s convention bump, coupled with upheaval at the top of the Democratic National Committee, has scrambled the party just as it prepares to nominate Clinton later this week.

Emails contained in a batch of documents leaked from the DNC suggested some party officials were concerned about the fate of down-ballot Democrats.

Indeed, some Democrats locked in contentious congressional battles, such as former Sen. Russ Feingold, decided to skip the convention here in Philadelphia.
