Toiling together in the PR trenches

Susan Anthony and Jeffrey Davis, partners at Sawmill Marketing Communications, always knew that what started as a working relationship more than 16 years ago would one day lead to a business partnership. The two met when they were working in the public relations department at the former Richardson Myers and Donofrio, now Carton Donofrio Partners.

“We did really good work together,” said Anthony. “And it was always in the back of our minds that we would like to come back together again, and this seemed like a good opportunity. It?s one thing to like working together, but it?s another thing to like working together and doing really good work.”

Anthony originally started the firm as a sole practitioner in 1995 and Davis joined the agency as a partner in 2005. What makes the agency unique, they say, is that two senior-level public relations executives actually work in the trenches with their clients to develop and implement business strategies.

“I wanted to get back to doing PR, not managing people who do PR,” said Anthony. “I?ve always thought my strengths were in the creative end and client services.”

The agency currently has seven retainer clients, including HRH, a Baltimore international insurance firm; RealLife HR, an online health care benefit administration firm; energy consulting firm South River Consulting and BTU Energy.

Anthony said that many companies are opting for public relations in lieu of or in addition to more traditional advertising.

“Marketing PR has been in existence for a while, so people who are doing it are more sophisticated than they were 10 to 15 years ago,” said Anthony. “The other area is the third-part credibility of the news media ? readers trust that.”
