Children sent to hospital after motor coach crash

More than 30 children from Fulton Elementary School were transported to Children?s National Medical Center in Washington with minor injuries Monday after two motor coaches in which they were traveling hit each other.

The entire second grade of Fulton Elementary took a field trip Monday to the Smithsonian in Washington and were traveling back along South Capital Street in four motor coaches, owned by Woodlawn Motor Coach Inc., when one motor coach rear-ended the other, said Howard County Public Schools spokeswoman Patti Caplan.

Officials transported 32 children to the Children?s Hospital, where doctors classified 31 as having “minor injuries,” and one as having underwent “trauma,” a hospital spokeswoman said.

The children were all treated and released from the hospital Monday.

Caplan said she did not know if the motor coaches were equipped with seat belts or whether the children were wearing them.
