D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray asked his top law enforcement official to investigate allegations by former mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown that Gray gave him a high-paying job in exchange for Brown’s support during the election.
Gray made the announcement at a hastily put together press conference on Sunday afternoon. He was responding to a Washington Post article in which Brown alleged Gray campaign aides gave him a series of cash payments to help finance Brown’s own mayoral campaign as a stalking horse to incumbent Mayor Adrian Fenty. After Gray won the election, Brown was hired for a six-figure position in the D.C. Department of Health Care Finance.
Gray vehemently denied the accusations, and said he asked the D.C. Attorney General to investigate the allegations.
“I am not in the business of giving out jobs,” Gray said. “I can’t even imagine engaging in such reprehensible behavior.”
City police removed Brown from his office last month after questions arose about his qualifications.
