Double the joyful noise

Guitarist Christopher Parkening and baritone Jubilant Sykes met musically many years ago when the Minister of Music at the California church both attended suggested they do something together for the Christmas program.

That first duet of “Sweet Little Jesus Boy” led to a close friendship and frequent collaboration in varied programs culminating each year with their beloved program of Christmas music. Their magical and intimate treatment of traditional favorites and contemporary works returns to George Mason University Friday.

From the opening notes of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” sung off-stage by Sykes to the gentle chords of “Silent Night,” the blend of virtuoso guitar and voice fill the hall with wonder and delight.

“The wood and strings of the guitar work beautifully with the human voice,” Sykes says. “Our opening number sets the stage. We tried it different ways, but because it’s most like a plainsong, we decided it should be sung a cappella.”

“Christmas is a special time for myself and Jubilant,” Parkening says. “The birth of Jesus Christ has sparked the creation of some of the most beautiful music ever written.”
