Trump ties Obama as most admired man

President Trump and former President Barack Obama are tied for the most admired man of 2019, according to a Gallup poll of U.S. residents released on Monday.

The poll marks the first time Trump has topped the list and the 12th time Obama has been featured in the top spot.

The survey recorded a sharp bipartisan split, with 41% of adult Democrats voting for Obama and 45% selecting Trump. An American president has been selected in 58 of the previous 72 Gallup polls that asked the question.

Trump has seen a rise in popularity in the past few years, with 18% of U.S. residents selecting him as most admired, up from 13% in 2018 and 14% in 2017.

Other men receiving votes included businessman Elon Musk, former President Jimmy Carter, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, California Rep. Adam Schiff, Pope Francis, the Dalai Lama, and investor Warren Buffett.

Gallup also recorded votes for most admired female. First lady Melania Trump received 5% of the vote, coming in second to former first lady Michelle Obama, who received 10%. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won 22 of 25 polls over the past several decades.

The most recent polls were conducted between Dec. 2 and Dec. 15 and have been recorded every year since 1948.
