LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s winter wheat crop will be a bit bigger than USDA officials predicted last month, but the harvest will still be 15 percent smaller than 2011.
The Agriculture Department said Wednesday Nebraska wheat farmers are expected to harvest 55.4 million bushels. That’s 9 percent higher than the June forecast.
The department says the yield is expected to average 42 bushels per acre. That’s up 2 bushels an acre from last month’s forecast but still 3 bushels behind last year’s crop.
Nebraska wheat farmers are expected to harvest 1.32 million acres. That’s up from the 1.27 million acres the USDA reported last month but still 9 percent less than last year.
This wheat forecast is based on the crop’s July 1 condition. The USDA says Nebraska’s wheat harvest is nearly complete.
