NBA and ESPN announces ‘horse’ competition featuring top players

Basketball is coming back to prime-time television, just not in the format that fans have grown accustomed to watching.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN and the NBA will host a “horse” competition, pitting top players from around the league in a game that is usually reserved for playground basketball courts around the country.

“Sources: The NBA and ESPN plan to televise a HORSE competition is nearing completion and among those expected to participate include Chris Paul, Trae Young and Zach LaVine,” Wojnarowski tweeted Wednesday. “Competition will also include a couple of WNBA players and recent NBA alumni.”

With players likely sidelined for the 2020 season, the NBA has moved quickly to absorb the loss of viewership and revenue. The league has worked with ESPN to broadcast a NBA 2K players tournament in which players compete with each other via a video game livestream.

“Horse” is a basketball shooting competition where two or more players attempt to replicate shots made by another player.
