Fairfax supervisor calls on School Board to spare Clifton

Springfield Supervisor Pat Herrity on Monday urged Fairfax School Board officials to spare Clifton Elementary.

Herrity, speaking at a public hearing alongside concerned Clifton parents, said “keeping Clifton Elementary School open and deferring renovation would be beneficial for four major reasons.”

Herrity’s reasons:

  • The Clifton community would get to keep their school.
  • Sparing Clifton would save the School Board $11 million, freeing up funding for “schools throughout the county that are in dire need of renovation.”
  • Sparing Clifton would allow local officials “time to explore the potential use of creative partnerships and historic rehabilitation tax credits to rehabilitate school buildings for continued educational use.”
  • Sparing Clifton keeps all future options open, most importantly “future expansion to address the overcrowding or some form of renovation.”

The School Board is scheduled to decide Clifton Elementary’s fate July 8.
