HOUSTON (AP) — The girlfriend of a researcher whom prosecutors say was poisoned has told jurors the man suspected a colleague, who was his lover, of the deed. But Evette Toney told a Harris County jury Tuesday that George Blumenschein chose not to tell authorities immediately for fear Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo might hurt him again while he recovered in a hospital.
Gonzalez-Angulo, a breast cancer doctor, is on trial on an assault charge for allegedly spiking her lover’s coffee with toxic ethylene glycol in 2013.
Prosecutors allege Gonzalez-Angulo’s relationship with Blumenschein turned into a “fatal attraction” after he spurned her in favor of Toney. Defense attorneys argue others, including Toney, may be responsible.
Toney testified Tuesday in Houston that she didn’t poison Blumenschein, who survived, and that he quickly suspected Gonzalez-Angulo.
