Time for Helen Thomas to retire — or be fired
Re: “WH press corps’ Helen Thomas tells Jews to leave Israel and ‘go home to Poland and Germany,’ ” Beltway Confidential, June 4
Helen Thomas’ bigoted and anti-Semitic remarks last week were totally inappropriate. Her apologies for stating that the Israelis should “get the hell out of Palestine,” and suggesting that they should go to Germany, Poland or the United States, are insufficient.
It’s high time the oldest White House correspondent be released or terminated from the White House press corps.

Insulting former president in White House was rude
Re: “Dim Bulb,” June 4
It was profoundly ignorant and condescending for former Beatle Paul McCartney to say that former President George W. Bush does not know what a library is.
Bush has a B.A. from Yale, an MBA from Harvard and is married to a former librarian with a master’s degree in library science. Bush may not be well spoken, but he is honest, forthright, well educated and well read.
It was arrogant and rude of McCartney to insult the presidency in the White House, whether or not the current president agreed. Mr. McCartney is clearly very talented at making music, but he is certainly no intellectual giant himself.

Worst argument for legalized abortion ever
Re: “Time to legalize immigration,” June 2, and “Parallel between immigration, abortion,” From Readers, June 4
Tanya Spann Roche makes a wonderful point: “Women will have abortions one way or another, so it makes much more sense for them to be safe and legal.” In fact, let’s use her argument for issues other than abortion.
How about: “Thugs will rape women one way or another, so it makes much more sense for them to be safe and legal”? Let’s do the same for terrorists, child abusers and World War II war criminals.
The “they’ll do it anyway” argument is among the worst reasons for legalized murder that anyone has come up with so far. Yet those who call themselves “pro-choice” continue to insist on a woman’s “right” to have her baby’s skull crushed or its skin burned off with saline solution.
Perhaps Ms. Roche should read Exodus 20:13 and Psalm 139:13-16 before taking a stance on the side of homicide.
