A public service announcement set to air on Christmas features NBA stars to end gun violence.
The 32-second ad features four NBA stars — Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers, Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks and Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls, in addition to shooting survivors and relatives of those killed by guns.
The Spike Lee-directed spot is in support of Everytown for Gun Safety, which was founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Never are the words “gun control” mentioned. Everytown is a nonprofit organization that advocates for gun control, most recently focusing on efforts to expand background checks for firearm purchases.
“My daughter Riley is that age,” Curry says, recalling the story of a 3-year-old girl who was shot over the summer.
Paul recalls advice he heeded as a child: “My parents used to say, ‘A bullet doesn’t have a name on it.'”
“The gun should never be an option,” Anthony says, discussing the gun violence he witnessed as a kid.
Noah speaks on reducing gun violence that plagues Chicago.
“In the United States, 88 people die of gun violence everyday,” the ad concludes.
More ads are also set to air on Christmas during five NBA games slated for the day.
“We’re proud to join with the NBA, these NBA stars and Spike Lee to highlight stories of gun violence in America and bring people together to address the problem,” President of Everytown for Gun Safety John Feinblatt said in a statement. “This partnership shows the wide range of people who are willing to speak up and be a part of our growing movement.
