One person injured after package explodes at Boston’s Northeastern University

One person was injured when a package exploded after being opened at Boston’s Northeastern University on Tuesday, according to police and the school.

The package was mailed to Holmes Hall on campus around 7 p.m. and detonated shortly thereafter when a staff member opened it, the university said, according to NBC10 Boston. A reporter with the outlet said the package detonated 15 minutes after delivery, around 7:15 p.m. Boston Emergency Services tweeted at 7:56 p.m. that it had taken one person to the hospital. Another suspicious package was reported to police near the Museum of Fine Arts Boston but was just an empty suitcase.

The injured staff member “suffered minor injuries and is being treated” at a local hospital, Shannon Nargi, a university spokeswoman, said in a statement emailed to CNN.

The Boston Police Department’s bomb squad and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force are investigating the incident. Authorities are looking for a suspect, and an official said they have found a note, an NBC News reporter tweeted.

Students at Holmes Hall were evacuated after the explosion, one student told NBC 10 Boston.

“We were in class, and then we saw two policemen walk through the building. And then, as soon as we look out the window, we see a fire truck with the lights on blazing, and then our teacher is like, ‘I gotta see what’s going on,’” the student said. “And he sees that the firetruck is going, and there’s a police car outside. And as that happened, instantly the fire alarm starts going off.”

The explosion seemed to be small, and a student from Holmes Hall told NBC10 Boston that he and his fellow students never heard anything that sounded like an explosion and were surprised by the arrival of first responders.

Holmes Hall is home to several academic departments, “including Earth and environmental sciences, communication studies, and human services,” according to Northeastern University. Students interviewed by NBC10 Boston also indicated that it contains dorm rooms.
