Virginia: get to know your neighbors

The U.S. Census Bureau has announced it will release Virginia’s detailed population data late next week. This is as up close and personal as it gets from the Census in terms of the most up-to-date state and community data.

The population data will provide summaries of population totals, as well as data on race, Hispanic origin and voting age for multiple geographies within the state, such as census blocks, tracts, voting districts, cities, counties and school districts. The information will be used to address any redistricting issues and will likely be used by interest groups for new reports on community and state demographic trends.

Louisiana, Mississippi and New Jersey also will be released next week.

Each state’s geographic products and redistricting data are first delivered to the state’s leadership then released to the public. Within 24 hours of delivery to the state, the full set of five detailed tables will be available to the public online here.

According to law, the Census Bureau must provide redistricting data to the 50 states no later than April 1 of the year following the census. The Bureau has said it will deliver the data state-by-state in February and March.
