Kirsten Gillibrand formally joined the 2020 presidential race Sunday, telling supporters to join her for a campaign kickoff rally in front of Trump Tower in New York City.
“We’re bringing the fight to Trump’s doorstep,” the event page declares.
Gillibrand, a 52-year-old Democratic senator from New York, announced the official start of her campaign in a two-minute video titled “Brave Wins.” In the video, she lists a number of goals, saying that they are not impossible.
“We launched ourselves into space and landed on the moon. If we can do that, we can definitely achieve universal healthcare,” Gillibrand says. “We can provide paid family leave for all, end gun violence, pass a Green New Deal, get money out of politics and take back our democracy. None of this is impossible.”
Gillibrand is casting herself as a direct opposite to President Trump. Her video ends with an invitation to meet on March 24 in front of Trump Tower in New York, the same location that Trump launched his campaign for president in 2015.
In an Instagram post, Gillibrand writes: “I’m fighting for an America where we lead with bravery and compassion, not fear and greed—and I’m taking that fight straight to President Trump’s doorstep. Join me at Trump International in New York City on Sunday, March 24. RSVP link in bio.”
Gillibrand announced an exploratory campaign in January, and since that time has been traveling to key early-voting states. She has also met with other potential 2020 contenders, including Stacey Abrams.
Despite being labeled as relatively moderate in the past, Gillibrand has swung to the left on a number of issues recently in a bid to court the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party. She joins a number of others vying for the seat including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas.
Former Vice President Joe Biden has not announced a run yet, although he is leading in the polls and got a little ahead of himself about his plans for a 2020 White House run at an event in Delaware on Saturday.
