California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized Republican governors in states such as Texas that have eliminated coronavirus restrictions and said his state would instead be “doubling down.”
“We will be doubling down on mask-wearing,” Newsom said Thursday, adding that California is “not arguing to follow the example of Texas and other states that I think are making a terrible mistake.”
GREG ABBOTT RULES OUT ANY CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWNS IN TEXAS
Earlier this week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott rolled back face-mask requirements and announced that 100% of businesses can now reopen.
“This is not the time to spike the ball,” Newsom added. “There’s no ‘mission accomplished’ sign behind us.”
California also updated its face-mask recommendations on Thursday and expressed support for “double-masking.”
“‘Double masking’ is an effective way to improve fit and filtration,” the guidelines say. “A close-fitting cloth mask can be worn on top of a surgical/disposable mask to improve the seal of the mask to the face.”
In another attempt to slam Abbott, Newsom called the Texas Republican “absolutely reckless” on Twitter.

Other prominent Democrats also weighed in with negative reactions to the move by Florida and Texas, including President Biden, who was widely panned by conservatives for calling the move “Neanderthal thinking.”
