House lawmakers will designate the hearing room of the House Oversight and Reform Committee in honor of the committee’s late chairman, Elijah Cummings.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the committee’s current chairwoman, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, will christen the room with its new name on Thursday. Pelosi announced the honor for the late Maryland Democrat on Tuesday.
“As our nation celebrates Black History Month, a bipartisan group of Members of Congress will join together to name 2154 Rayburn House Office Building, the ‘Elijah E. Cummings Room,'” Pelosi’s office said in a statement.
Cummings died suddenly on Oct. 17 at age 68 from health complications related to a surgery he underwent two years prior to repair a valve in his heart. At the time, he led the House Oversight Committee, and his death surprised many colleagues who were unaware of how seriously his health had deteriorated.
