Suspect arrested in stabbing of two Asian women in San Francisco

Police arrested a man suspected of stabbing two Asian women in San Francisco.

Officers responded to a reported stabbing at approximately 4:51 p.m. on Tuesday, San Francisco Police Department public information officer Robert Rueca told the Washington Examiner.

The man, aged 55, was apprehended by police at 7 p.m., he said, adding that charges were still pending and that the incident had not yet been ruled a hate crime. Rueca did not give the suspect’s name.

Matt Haney, the supervisor for San Francisco’s 6th District, tweeted details about the attack on Tuesday.

“Disgusting and horrific attack on Market St this afternoon of two Asian seniors,” he said. “I’ve been closely in touch with the SFFD and SFPD. The suspect was just arrested. The victims are at the hospital.”

Haney also said that one of the victims, 85, had to undergo surgery but later tweeted that both of the victims were in stable condition.

KPIX identified the 85-year-old victim as Chui Fong Eng and said that the other victim was 65.

“She was on the N Judah, or going on to the N Judah, waiting for it, and I guess she was attacked from behind and stabbed through the arm and into the chest,” Eng’s grandson told the outlet. “And they had to keep her that way and strap her tight till they got to the hospital in the ambulance.”

“The assailant walked up to their victim stabbed them and very casually walked away in broad daylight,” said Jenny Shao, identified as a witness to the attack.

“He got a knife on his right-hand side, and he was holding it really tight like he wanted to do something,” another witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said. “And before you know, he was behind this lady with a black jacket, and you saw all the feathers go flying, so he sliced her, she screamed.”

The incident on Tuesday is just the latest in a series of violent attacks against Asian people in the United States. Graphic video that surfaced this week allegedly shows a Baltimore man on Monday beating two Korean women with a cinder block. The man has been arrested and is facing two counts of aggravated assault.
