No group claimed responsibility for the attack in its immediate aftermath, and it’s the latest in a series of similar bombings that have taken place in recent weeks since the Taliban took over control of the government and the U.S. withdrew.
The mosque that was targeted on Friday is one attended by Sunni Muslims, while the previous attacks have struck Shiite mosques, according to Reuters. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the previous attacks.
ISIS and the Taliban are enemies of one another, though Western countries are concerned about the possibility that the latter could allow the former to grow and prosper in Afghanistan.
