Harmony in friendship, music

Some things just get better with time.

At least, that?s what folk musicians Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer think.

“We?ve been doing this for 25 years and we?re going to keep doing what we do but expanding to new audiences,” Fink said. “Our goal isn?t to see what we can change, but to see how we can introduce what we have to offer to more people.”

“We?re versatile people with a lot of musical tastes,” Fink said when asked to describe their musical style. “If I had to, I would say contemporary, traditional folk country and swing.”

The duo performs family concerts, which involve a lot of audience participation, as well as adult concerts. Fink says that their adult music has evolved and grown over time. “It started out based in roots, kind of folk and old time and early swing. We?ve built on that to expand to writing in those styles and composing newer music in those styles,” she said. “We have a really great time.”

The musicians, who started playing banjo and guitar when they were kids, will be performing an adult concert at the University of Baltimore at 8 p.m. tonight.

“[The evening concert] is where we focus more in a repertoire that there will still be some participation, but that?s when Marcy?s really great musicianship on the guitar shows through, that?s when our harmony signing, country and jazz harmony shows through,” Fink said.

Although Fink and Marxer have been performing together for more than 25 years, Fink insists that they are great friends. “We not only get along, we get along great,” she said. “We have nothing but respect for each other and our ideas. I feel incredibly lucky to have such a talented partner with such a great personality.”

“[Cathy and Marcy] have cross-generational appeal in both family programming (made clear by the sell out) and folk music. Their folk music has a wide variety of influences that appeal to music lovers across genres who admire both instrumental and vocal virtuosity,” said Joan Weber, the Theatre Events Coordinator for the University of Baltimore.
