Trump’s nominee to be ambassador to China advances in Senate

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday advanced a group of nominees, including Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who President Trump has nominated to be his ambassador to China.

The committee advanced Branstad’s nomination in a unanimous voice vote during a brief business meeting.

Several other nominations were advanced, including Trump’s nominations to be ambassador to the Republic of Senegal, and the Republic of the Congo.

The committee moved immediately to consider the nomination of John Sullivan to be deputy secretary of state.
