The Justice Department is planning to announce on Wednesday indictments of Russian operatives involved in the theft of data from 500 million Yahoo user accounts in 2014.
Two spies from the Russian intelligence agency, FSB, and two hackers will be indicted, which would be the first U.S. criminal cyber charges against Russian government officials, the Washington Post reported.
Yahoo reported the heist in September 2016. It said it had lost information, both encrypted and unencrypted data, that included personal and contact information, as well as security questions and answers. The company said an internal investigation confirmed the account information was stolen from the company’s network by a third party state-sponsored actor, but didn’t specify which.
The Justice Department is scheduled to hold a press conference at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
