As part of an overall gang-prevention strategy, Gov. Robert Ehrlich announced a $200,000 grant Saturday for Boys & Girls Clubs in Maryland.
The money will fund youth development programs at chapters across the state. The grant supports Ehrlich?s initiative, which is aimed at protecting the state?s youth.
“We need to continue to support viable, education-oriented organizations, like the Boys & Girls clubs, that offer alternatives to gang life,” Ehrlich said in a written statement.
Clubs receiving portions of the funds include: Boys & Girls Club of Washington County, Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Baltimore, Boys & Girls Club of Cecil County, Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maryland, Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Boys & Girls Club of Harford County, Indian Head Maryland Navy Youth Center, Annapolis Maryland Navy Youth Program, Fort Detrick Youth Services Sky Dome, Fort Meade Youth Services, Aberdeen Youth Center and Edgewood Youth Center.
Ehrlich?s gang strategy focuses on prevention, intervention and enforcement.
It involves several government agencies and community partners to address gang activity at school, in correctional institutes and in the community.
