Northam to ban guns from grounds of Virginia State Capitol

Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is planning to impose a temporary emergency ban on bringing guns on Capitol Square in Richmond.

The report comes from two state officials who were notified about the plans, according to the Associated Press. The ban would be effective Wednesday, when groups are planning a gun rights rally.

The emergency declaration follows the Virginia General Assembly passing a ban on visitors carrying a gun at the Virginia State Capitol. The ban will include guns from being carried in the staff offices of representatives.

Democratic House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn claimed the rule would “keep everybody safe” and should have been put in place “a long, long time ago.”

Northam, 60, has been embroiled in a fight with Second Amendment activists as the governor attempts to crack down on gun ownership. The governor has threatened to send in the National Guard to enforce potential gun legislation. More than 90% of counties in the commonwealth have passed resolutions signaling defiance and nonenforcement of potential gun control laws.
