Job fair catering to D.C. residents only

More than 100 employers will be available Tuesday for D.C. job-seekers at the 10th Annual Norton Job Fair.

The event, hosted by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, is only for District of Columbia residents because many jobs here go to employees who live outside the city, she said.

Participants must bring identification or a document proving they are D.C. residents.

“The fair brings jobs to D.C. residents early to level the playing field,” Norton said.

The District’s unemployment rate dropped slightly in May to 5.6 percent, Norton said, but the figure was still twice the region’s rate and a percentage point higher than the national rate.

Although the District gained almost 11,000 jobs in the last year, most went to Maryland and Virginia residents, Norton said.

Employers at the fair include federal and D.C. government agencies, National Public Radio, Unity Health Care and 1st Choice Staffing.

The fair will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Washington Convention Center. Before the fair, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., the event will feature a workshop on preparing a resume, boosting interviewing skills and dressing for success.
